Sonder- n. the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own.


It’s a made up word, yet aren’t all words made up? And regardless of sonder’s debatable validity as a word, it’s perhaps the most important word to keep in mind when crafting a story.


It’s true. No character in a story should at any time feel as though he or she isn’t the main character. In the real world, no one lives a life entirely in someone else’s. Every individual life is extraordinarily complex. People are complex. Don’t reduce a character to anything less.
