Groundhog Day is So Good it Killed Groundhog Day

This is the first image I got when google image searching “groundhog day.”

That is, Groundhog Day the movie killed Groundhog Day the holiday.

Punxsutawney Phil, the precog groundhog, predicts an early spring this year, after not seeing his shadow after coming up from his burrow. Odds are, unless you live in rural Pennsylvania, you didn’t know. You were too busy watching the all-day marathon of the movie on Comedy Central like me. Or maybe you’re a normal person and couldn’t care less about some rodent’s shadow. Either way, Groundhog Day, which used to be kind of a big holiday, is more a cultural relic than anything else. A rural town’s oddity that- like the groundhog in question- had its moment in the sun and then went out of sight.

And it’s all thanks to Bill freaking Murray.

The 1993 comedy has a little bit of everything. A lot of laughter, a cool (though not entirely novel) sci-fi premise, and a surprising amount of heart. It’s way better than the holiday it takes place during. And now, 23 years later, if you hear the words “groundhog day” uttered on any day other than February 2nd, odds are they refer to the movie instead of the holiday.

And let’s face it. It was a shitty holiday. How would you even celebrate it anyways? If Phil had actual weather manipulating powers that would be cool. But he would still only be the third coolest rodent in American pop culture, behind Mickey Mouse and Desperaux. And, because he doesn’t have weather controlling powers, and there’s no unexplained correlation between his “prediction” and how long the cold days last, I think we can all agree that Groundhog Day is probably the worst of all the “major” holidays. Perhaps that’s the reason the writers of the movie decided to stick their main character in a never-ending Groundhog Day, because it was the lamest of all days to get stuck repeating.
