They found him lying in the bed one day, brown as chocolate and still smelling new and fresh, the sort of smell that wears off a stuffed bear very quickly. It had been an age since either of them had had such a smell.

They were old bears now and had been together for a very long time: Mister and Missus Bear, the perfect Valentine’s Day gift, a complete set. Only they hadn’t been, not really. At night whilst their owners slept in their big white bed, Mister and Missus Bear would wander over to the window and stare up at the lonely stars in the night sky and wish for the thing they feared they’d never have.

And yet there he was now, lying in the bed, smiling with new-toy innocence. He didn’t look quite like them – his fur was chocolate-brown, not like their creamy colour at all– but they didn’t care. They had a little baby bear at last.

That night, they heard the voices of their owners.

“They look happy together, don’t they? The three bears.”

“They are happy. And we’ll be happy too.”

“Do you think he‘ll like the bears?”

“I’m sure he’ll love them.”

The acceptance of all colour size and creed, the hint of innocent beginings, the hope for all our tomorrows… hidden inside a simplistic tale. Good job.

  2. Of all the times I have seen these bears together, I have never noticed the difference. Well, I have noticed, just not registered. They were an offer too good to refuse.

I like the idea of the new one coming along. I wonder if the new one is being adopted.

It’s so cute, all three bears, the Mom and Dad bear so happy to gave their baby beat. But I think the human baby is going to grow up and be hard on those bears, a lot like life will be hard on the baby. Great piece.
